The Digital Switchover

Will the digital switchover affect your organisation?
What is the Digital Switchover? Very simply, the Digital Switchover is when the older analogue telephone landlines are replaced with digital services technology.
When will this happen? The deadline for the switchover is January 2027, but the process is already underway, with many residential landlines already switched over. Each provider has its own timeline and process, and they will contact you regarding your line.
Why does my organisation need to be aware of this? The switchover may impact your organisation in several ways:
- If you currently use a traditional landline
- The new lines will require power
- Certain equipment may not function after the switchover, including:
- Point of sale devices
- Fax machines
- Franking machines
- Alarm panels
- Lifts
The list goes on…
Additionally, the switchover may affect your service users, especially if they rely on a telephone landline and lack access to digital technology, or if they use personal alarms and monitoring systems (telecare).
There may be costs associated with upgrading systems and replacing devices, and you may need to acquire new digital skills to operate these devices.
Be aware of scams related to the digital switchover. Reports have surfaced of letters and phone calls from “companies” claiming they can arrange early switchover.
2G/3G networks Alongside the digital switchover for phone lines, mobile providers will also be shutting down 2G and 3G networks. The 3G network will be turned off by the end of 2025, while 2G will remain until 2033. Many devices are still connected to these networks.
Looking ahead Now is a good time to start planning for the switchover, which could bring positive changes to your organisation. Review your current practices and explore ways to improve your communications. Identify affected devices, engage with suppliers, and discuss potential alternatives. Don’t just replace everything—consider what truly needs replacing.
If you’re unsure about the impact of the Digital Switchover, contact your phone provider for clarification. Remember, the switchover won’t affect everyone.
